Village History

The Village Name within historic Documents...

Village Details and Village History:

The Village and Family Name within old documents:

The name of the Sassmannshausen village and correspondingly the later on used family name has been mentioned in old documents many times. The year or estimated time of it's founding however has not been conserved over the decades and thus is not known to us today. According to Möhn (1) the settlements of the "-hausen" villages and townships around Wittgenstein are to be associated to a period more backwards in time, estimated around 950 to 1150 after Christ.

(The oldest historic writing regarding the village name which has been conserved as original document, city archive of Bad-Berleburg, Germany.)

1492 - Sasmanshausen

Sasmanshausen" (Dragon Manor of Sasmanshausen) is mentioned as the possession of the "Church of Feuding".

1572 - Sassmannshausen
Mentioned within various documents as "Sassmannshausen" - using the spelling in the customary form as today.

1580 - Saszmanszhausen
"Frowin von Sasmanshausen" (my brother is called "Jens-Eric-Frowin", too) is selling one third of the "Füssenwiese", a grassland area near Saszmanszhausen to "Ebersbach zu Laasphe" (Frowin could not been proved to be definitely identified as "family member" - whereas my brother could :-) ...

End of the 16th Century

 - Sasmetshausen/Sasmutshausen
is mentioned as
Sasmetshausen/Sasmutshausen

Note: the translation into English was not very easy and is partly interrupted by German or even medieval German words, expressions and names. Due to the historic background this could however not been fully avoided. We know it does not make reading much easier. If you'd like to follow the original German website linked to this page, which has been created by Andreas Sassmannshausen just follow this link.
